Biography / Biografia

Antonio Milana was born in Rome 1958. He started off his creative journey in music while still studying in high school.

Appealed by new sound experimentation – a trend that will feed later into his visual art – he does not attend art schools and academies. Art, both visual and sound, is his life.

At the age of 16, he goes to England for the first time, where he studies English, and then again when he was 18. At the end of the ’70s, he is back in London and lives in Brixton, a suburban multiethnic area rich with a strong cultural movement at that time.

Then he begins a series of short stays in New York, where he ‘observes’ the activities related to contemporary avant-garde taking place in the Greenwich Village. This is when, linking ‘sound’ and ‘sign’, he answers his call for colour, space and material, proposing a conceptual expression in constant search for the sign, intended as trace, mark and track.

His early works come to light during the first years of the ’80s, and they are the expression of an intimate conversation, not intended for the market, where exhibition takes on a marginal role compared to elaboration.

His passion for graphics, both ancient and modern, brings him in contact with important realities in the Italian art world, like the historic printing house of Rosalba and Romolo Bulla, where he meets Toti Scialoja, Carla Accardi and Gianni Dessì.

He starts his exhibitions following a path that will take him around Italy and abroad, with personal and collective shows.

In 2007 he is invited to exhibit in a personal show called ‘ALTRI SOLCHI’ at the Galleria Campioli in Monterotondo (Rome), and then in a collective show in the Officina dell’Arte in Rome, together with Achille Pace, Giosetta Fioroni , Carlo Mattioli and Tommaso Cascella.

In 2008 his works are present in the preview of the MAUI Biennial in Teano, in the Museum of the Arts of Italian Unification, and then he exhibits at the MAUI Biennial itself, at the Monumental Royal Belvedere Site in San Leucio, Caserta. In the same year he has a personal exhibition, called ‘IO NON ATTRAVERSO L’UNIVERSO TUTTO DA SOLO’ (I do not cross the Universe all alone), at the Minimal Gallery in Grottaferrata, Rome.

He exhibits at the first Biennial of Chianciano (Siena) in 2009, and he is at the Mediamuseum in Pescara – Museum of Writing and Image – with his personal exhibition ‘RIFLESSIONI VISIVE’ (Visual Reflections) in 2010.

During the same year, he takes part to the Biennial of London, then he exhibits in a personal show named ‘TRACCE’ (Traces), at the Bosi Contemporary, where old and new works give life to his first retrospective exhibition.

Some of his works are present at the Crocetti Museum in Rome, in the collective show ‘ARS CREANDI’, and then the collective show ‘BABEL’- 80 Artists – 80 Languages, at the Soligo Contemporary Art Studio, in Rome. In 2011 his works are shown in the Genoa IV Biennial Contemporary Art catalogue.

In February 2012, invited by the City Council of Formello, Rome, he exhibits in the Orsini Hall of the Chigi Palace, at the Agro Veientano Museum. During the show ‘FORME COEVE’, he participates to the ‘Festa dei Mezzi Musei’ (Half Museums Festival), organised by the Latium Association of Museums against the state cutting of subsidies to museums. Thus, ‘OLTRE IL BUIO’ (Beyond the dark) takes place. As a sign of protest, he switches off the lights in the Orsini Hall and, in the dark, he is sitting at a table with his colours and papers, illuminated by a small light, and allowing the vision of his exhibition only to visitors equipped with flash lights.

In the same year, he takes part to the collective show ‘Uovo d’Artista’ (Artist Egg) at the Granarone in Calcata, Rome, and ‘LIGHTS & SHADOWS’ at Bosi Contemporary in Rome, where he is amongst artists such as Boetti, Accardi and Vedova.

In 2015, the personal exhibition ‘Directions,’ held in the independent space of Trastfactory, started off a number of shows such as ‘Exposta’ – near Posta – a contemporary collective exhibition sponsored by the Italian Pavilion at the EXPO fair in Milan. There followed ‘Contemporary Paths’, a collective exhibition by Ilaria Caravaglio, organised in the countryside of Ostuni, Puglia.

Milana is amongst the artists awarded at the XX National Contemporary Art Contest by Mario Napoli, at SATURA Art Gallery in Genoa.

In November 2015, he has a personal exhibition – ‘HITS’ – in the ARTHES GALLERY in Rome, introduced by Sara Fiorelli.

In March 2016, he takes part in a bi-personal exhibition in the 3B Gallery in Rome, together with Tulumello.

In September 2016, he creates ‘Once I was a gate’ for MAAM – Museo dell’Altro e dell’Altrove di Metropoliz Città Meticcia – by Giorgio de Finis , Bordeaux editions 2017.

One of his works is present in the permanent art collection of the DIF – Museo Diffuso di Formello, nearby Rome. DIF is the Everywhere Museum by Giorgio de Finis, INSIDEARTAUTORI 2017.

In August 2017, he is invited by ArteLiberaTutti to take part in “FACE to FACE” in the Carcere Mandamentale di Montefiascone (VT) – project by Giorgio de Finis.

From 24th November to 10th December of the same year, he is amongst the artists opening the Galleria CONTATTO, in the collective show named “ROMA 40 X 40”.

In December 2018, within the MACRO ASILO project at the MACRO of Rome – MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART OF ROME – he performs and works on wood and paper in the “#atelier 3”.

In October 2019, he installs and exhibits his works in the medieval centre of Sacrofano (Rome, Italy), with the ITINERA project.

Starting June 2020, some of his works are present at the online exhibition Spectrum Festival, edited by Silvia Mazzilli.
In September 2020, he is amongst the artists invited to “OUI A LA REVOLUTION” at the MAAM – Museo dell’Altro e dell’Altrove di Metropoliz Città Meticcia – edited by Anna Bastoni
